I Hate Running Setbacks!

February 20, 2014

Before I get on with my normal, daily write up I am going to share some frustrations! It was around October/November that I made the decision to switch over to training hard for the longer distance races (half to full marathons). I have always loved racing the 5ks and 10ks. Then I ran the St. George marathon and ran a time of 2:54.20. I felt great; I felt like I could have ran faster and I knew that if I would have trained properly for a marathon I could have done better. So my mind started shifting towards the longer runs and wanting to race them competitively.
I started to train hard and began to put more mileage in. (I went from 35-40 miles a week to 45-53 miles a week- slowly I am building mileage up) I felt great… I raced a 5k earlier this month and my time was 33 seconds faster than last years time. It was like that for a couple of other races (St. George 1/2 and Footlocker 5k).
I decided that I wanted to get my marathon time down to 2:40 this year… But lately I have been feeling aches and pains that I have never felt (I guess that is what happens when you train and put a lot of mileage in- and for getting older :)). About a month ago my left foot (the ball of my foot) started to irritate me but it wasn’t that big of a deal… Of course each day I could feel it a little more. After today’s easy 5 mile run (40:45) and feeling my foot and the pain… I have dreadfully come to the conclusion that I should switch to doing spin and swimming for the next week or 2.
Aghhh, I am so bummed and I want to cry but I don’t know what to do. I am going to make an appointment with podiatrist (foot doctor) tomorrow… I know I should take time off now and stop now before I do real damage. I just hate that I am having these issues now that I have made up my mind to try to go all out.
I guess I will have to wait and see what the Doc says… In the meantime I will try out other things that I don’t usually do! Any suggestions? I know swimming is great but I have no clue on what to do in a pool (except to doggy paddle).

This is Corom helping me with an orthodox and cutting out a little spot in the orthodox where my foot hurts… What a man! πŸ˜‰

As I stated earlier… I went on an easy 40:45 minute run and put about 5 miles in. It was a beautiful morning…

My 2nd child lost her 1st tooth this morning… She is so excited!!!

Corom had the day off today so he got a lot of projects/cleaning done today. It was great! My oldest worked on her art-peacock project with the clay for the Reflections contest.

She has a month (I believe) to get it done. She is really good with art and being creative!
We took dinner over to a neighbor who just got into a car accident… It took us about 20 minutes to get our girls back in the car because they were loving their yard…

After dinner, I went to a church meeting with our foreign exchange student, Z. It was a young women’s activity (girls between the age 12-18), called New Beginnings. It was a very nice program and Z (not being the same Faith as us) was one of the speakers. She did a wonderful job and everyone adores her.

Z and I came home… Corom left to go play basketball and I checked on the girls (they were sleeping)…

I hope she doesn’t get a kink in her neck or a leg cramp. πŸ™‚

Jenny I wish we lived closer to each other I would love to swim with you! My daughter and I just started swimming on Saturdays up here in Layton but I don’t think you want to come all the way out here to swim! Good luck with things! Hope you feel better soon.

    • I would love it, too! You could teach me a thing or 2 about that! I hope it doesn’t look bad if I bring floaties with me. πŸ˜‰

Glad you are going to the foot doc. You may want to talk to your Chiropractor too. When I started to have issues with feet, I found out my feet needed some support and realigning. My Chiro had some special foot inserts made for me and I have worn them for 10+ years. It made a world of difference. Good luck

    • Mary… I actually went to Dr. Crockett. He gave me some foot insoles to use. I have been using them for the past couple of days. They have helped me a lot! Dr. Crockett has helped out so much!

Good. He is a good Chiro.

  3. Check out Super Feet. They have them at most running stores. They are insoles and I have found they really help with foot issues. Hope you are feeling better soon. I certainly know the feeling.

    • Oh… Sarah, I hate it! πŸ™‚ but there is nothing I can do but let it heal, right? I will check out those insoles to see if it helps! Thanks so much for the advice!!!

      • You have my sympathy. Two summers ago I got plantar fasciitis and was told not to run and avoid being on my feet (not easy when you teach sports to kids). I was going crazy not running and saw the scale keep rising. I was getting angry without the activity. Rock would tell you I was not very nice. I know it is hard. Hope you are back to running soon.

We have had a very trying two weeks here ourselves mentally and physically. The two of us had a “little” loss and I was laid up last week. I kept asking the doctors when I could run again. I just needed that mental release more than anything. I totally understand! Hope you are well soon!

      • I am so sorry for your loss!!! I hope you are doing ok! I have also heard plantar fascitis is brutal! My poor kids are already feeling the wrath of me and this is only day 2. πŸ™‚

So sorry Jen! Running injuries are so frustrating! Hooray for a doctor’s appointment….not knowing can be half the battle! Good luck!

    • Thanks Toby! Of course, out of the 5 offices I called… 4 of them were not open on Fridays and the 5th one didn’t take my insurance… Hopefully Monday will be better luck with getting in!
